I lived in the hills of Eastern Tennessee back in 1966. While riding the school bus I saw lots of one room shacks & outhouses. Some of my classmates only got one haircut a year - at the start of school. I bet life has not changed much there.

Actually, that was one of my first jobs out of HS. another was chipping cement off of big cement trucks. And washing cars at the local Ford dealership. summer time I bucked 125# hay bails.

My first job out of HS was driving water trunk on mountain roads. Forest Dept required watering the road that be logging trucks use due to the dust they generate. I was a big old 48 white with about 18 gears (std) over and under grannies as it need half gears lugging 1000 gals of water up the hills. Worked from 6pm to 3pm (at that time there were no log trucks on the road.

My first drive was a 52 pickup. Big old 6 flat head.

My first car was a '54 Ford customline 4dr with ford's first o/h cam V8 239 ci. 3spd on the column. Pretty skyline blue. Cost $2.400 new
