2012 Diesel Cars in USA: Here’s the Lineup

Practical Environmentalist -- In the market for a vehicle and thinking about buying a new diesel car in 2012? It’s an idea worth considering.

From images of long-haul trucking, to nightmares of sitting in the back of a grandparent’s noxious Olds vista cruiser diesel, Americans haven’t shown too much interest in diesel cars in the past. Yet with the economy still in the doldrums, and gas prices rising faster than an express elevator, diesel cars are suddenly getting a lot more attention.

The good news is that many of the world’s manufacturers make great diesel products. The bad news is that lack of domestic demand and tightening budgets mean that few have been certified for sale in the U.S. The EPA has more stringent requirements than Europe does for controlling NOx – Nitric Oxide, the key compound that produces smo

I like mine. Just took a trip - 800 miles altogether, and averaged 40 mpg overall. And I had no trouble finding diesel at roughly the same price as regular unleaded -- then again, I only needed to fill the tank once the whole time.

There are still people who are ignorant about modern diesels claiming they are noisy and smelly. Many new German diesels meet ultra low emission standards in California

2010 VW diesel Jetta. Awesome gas mileage, 45 mpg on the highway and real adults can fit in the back seat. Diesel may be a little more expensive than gas, but gas mileage is WAY better on diesels. Still waiting for VW to bring the Tiguan diesel to the USA. Oh, and no emissions test in PA when getting a state inspection!

List is a bit dated. We'll start seeing 2013 models pretty soon. But good overview. I own one on the list and the extra purchase price is worth it. I get great mileage if I'm not into the pedal too much and love the extra torque on hills. And diesel is well below the cost of premium gasoline around here. Paid $3.29 yesterday.

Well, noisy diesels are usually pick up trucks that have been modified for the "tough" driver. They don't come noisy like that.

The reason the Audi A3 diesel is so inexpensive is that it has front-wheel drive, and who buys an Audi with front-wheel drive? Quattro not offered, but you can get a A3 Quattro with a 4-cyl. gas engine.

The government does not want us to use diesel engines! Recently read an article about a new three cyl diesel that will produce over 55 mpg. However, the "pollutants" are based on "per gallon" of fuel not the miles per gallon. In fact, the article stated that the pollutants are actually less then our current standard. It is common sense if you travel twice as far on the same fuel with less pollutants it is a winner!

It's good to see that the European makes that have made diesels for years, are being joined by American and Japanese brands as well.

One can buy a lot of gasoline for the extra cost of a diesel powered car that does not get that much better mileage and the fact that diesel has been more expensive then premium gas. Somebody is smoking something that is illegal.

Diesel isn't much cheaper than gas around here. It produces more noxious fumes. I really don't see the upside.

Ban diesel cars altogether. The things are highly toxic, and serve no useful purpose.

My clean diesel TDI is cleaner than any gasoline powered car and that's a fact. It also doesn't stink or smoke, two more facts for the ignorant. I also go much farther for the money than a comparable gasoline powered car.
