Another chance for Alfa Romeo

The Economist -- N 1995 Alfa Romeo ignominiously pulled out of America, having managed to sell only 400 cars there that year. Yet this month the sporting Italian marque, which is celebrating its centenary, was the star of the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California, a show for classic and concept cars that is perhaps the most prestigious of its kind in the world. Alfa brought over seven cars from its museum in Milan, but none of its current offerings. It is testimony to the enduring power of a brand that has a wonderful history but which for many years has over-promised and under-delivered. But unlike many Alfas from the fifties; she's worth $ 20,000 badly rusted and with the interior gutted by fire. Interested in a lightweight factory racer Giulietta Sprint Veloce? It was at $ 32K before the Euro took a tumble. Labor costs in the USA too great to restore it here, unless you're more devoted than I am.

They are cars running more on looks and passion than reliable parts, but who cares when they look so good? And when I say this, I am not necessarily referring to what we Americans think of when we think Italian, like Lambos and Ferraris. Even little Fiat and Alfa both manage to churn out some lookers. Will they be service nightmares? Yes. But sometimes you gotta buy a car because it speaks to your soul and not your wallet. If you think a car is a A to B transport and nothing else, buy your SUV or Prius or anything Honda makes. They are soulless "appliances" with all the pleasure of a root canal. And hey, if that's your bag, more power to ya. But for the rest of us, we'll continue to pine for 8C and the Mi.To and all the other Alfas out there that are beautiful first and everything else second. :)
