States with the highest gas prices

24/7 Wall Street -- Did your recent trip to the gas station feel like it took a higher toll than normal on your wallet? It probably wasn’t your imagination. Average gasoline prices in the United States increased by 5.1 percent, or 17 cents a gallon, during July, according to the AAA July 2012 Monthly Gas Price Report. This was the first monthly increase since March. It was also the highest increase in prices for the month of July since at least 2000 -- the first year AAA began recording prices.

“Higher global oil prices and increased demand for gasoline during the busy summer driving season were the primary factors that sent pump prices higher in July,” AAA spokesman Avery Ash said in a statement. AAA went on to note than an increase in gas prices was due to “rising crude and ethanol prices,

Consider yourself lucky because it is rare to find a station selling gas below $4.00 a gallon in the Chicago area. Most are $4.15 to $4.29. The last week saw a 44 cent increase.

Look at what you are paying for EVERYTHING today!! Numbers Don't Lie!" You are right. Numbers don't lie, they just distort the truth. Gas was $4.12 a gallon in 2008. The Great Recession of 2008 caused an economic collapse and a decline in oil demand. This caused gas prices to drop to $1.79. Maybe gas prices will go back to $1.79 but be prepared to face the economic consequences.

It's the price we have that is what matters. Get over this fantasy of going back to $2.00/gal gas. Those days are over. We burned that oil already. The oil that's left costs between $50 and $80 barrel just to get it out of the ground. That means $3.00 to $4.00/gal gas is here to stay. You can complain all you want but that doesn't change geology. The oil we have left is deep underground and is also deep under water. Big Oil is using technology that rivals NASA to get at this oil and we all know that NASA-level technology is never cheap.

I don't know about you but in Jan 2008, gas in New York was $2.20/gal. Sure beat the $4.00/gal we were paying in August of 2008, when George Dubya was still occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
