This may be a good thing because if there are no witnesses to an accident, at least this would record the event. The data may provide some valuable clues regarding a defect in the vehicle. Haven't you ever had a problem and even the dealer doesn't believe you.

I think that all cars and trucks should be required to have them.

Misleading is impression of binring in a black box....we have it today in almost all modern cars. How much is recorded highly depends on how much is computer controlled, but its there to some extent. It is not 'big brother watching' as many say as it cannot be read outside the car (its not the GPS many think of with this) or even the OnStar that can be hacked...it's local. It's also not just good for 'discrepancy in what a driver claims happened and what NHTSA concludes' but also with mfgr & to aid mfgr in determining fixes. Had Toyota opened up its system, it would likely know exactly what is wrong with acceleration rather than guessing & if as open as other mfgr's then wouldn't look so secretive on the investigations. Have not only refused/avoided court order black-box readings but have lied in the past on what is recorded since now showing readings for things in cars few yrs back they said in court cases was not recorded. This is not sowing good faith in customer safety. But article is right...Toyota is still a good co. with good products with recalls becoming avg for a firm all at once. I might even buy a used Toyota down the road, should their depreciation become avg or higher.

People get a test before the key will work, if they fail - NO DRIVING. So they borrow a neighbor's car to drive wrong way on freeways to kill folks.

If they can prove that there is a problem with a car or truck they are a good idea. But we don't need big brother always looking over our shoulder either.

It's probably a government initiative. So what does this data recorder consist of? In addition to taking data off the CAN bus, will it also have a 3 axis accelerometer in it? I can see where this might help prevent fraudlent lawsuites against a manufacturer, however.
